Intro
We're all egoists. Not in the sense that we think we're more important than other people, but in the sense that through existing we actively develop an Ego through our words and actions. You might have heard of the Ego before, but are you really sure what it is? There's a good chance you've been hearing about it without understanding it correctly.
What Is The Ego?
The ego or I in Freudian theory refers to an individual's sense of identity and agency. When we bring in Hegel's Idea of consciousness which lies outside of our own minds, we get a sense of the oceanic world of Ego that we inhabit. Early in life, children identify with their parents as they are expected to because they are not able to define themselves until later development stages; so they depend on others as who they are/are not. Nonetheless, children are actively making choices and thus, developing themselves and their Ego, by interacting with Ego that lies in the world, both in other people, and in the creations, speech, and institutions of mankind.
How Do We Know Ourselves?
Through introspection and other methods, we are able to examine our thought processes, behaviors, and actions to be able to reach an understanding of not only what motivates us, but the nature of what it is we are doing when we speak, work, and create our lives. Being self-aware is important in order to develop healthy relationships with others as well as ourselves, but to be aware of the world as well as ourselves gives us the chance at a meaningful, ethical, and enjoyable life.
