The Russian Ideology, or, "The Putin Vibe"
A Brief Accounting of Western and Russian Culture Machines
In “The Clash of Civilizations and The Remaking of World Order,” Samuel P. Huntington wrote about an inevitable clash between The Islamic World and The West. But today, there is new news. 9/11 happened, the US is out of Afghanistan, and now we are seeing something else entirely.
Putin’s influence is not just something which represents Russia’s interest, but rather Russian media itself. Russian culture and Western culture represent two largely separate spheres of entertainment. The consequences of this is that two entirely separate media machines operate. Putin is not just a strongman, but your favorite live stream podcaster. This is something which in the West, we don’t quite understand.
Politicians have press conferences, but Putin himself is not just the leader of Russia, he is an #influencer. He is part Kylie Jenner, part Joe Rogan.
Ukraine is not the only place Putin has supporters, he has supporters in every former Soviet bloc. He bolsters unrest with tanks which quelled the coup d’etat in Kazakhstan less than two months prior to today’s events in Ukraine. Putin wants to remain the main #influencer, and he doesn’t want NATO anywhere near him taking his audience.
Nationalism here motivates the West and Putin. In the #influencer battles, people die. “Nationalist” and “petty bourgeoise” take on the same meaning. A liberal nationality and a Russian nationalist is willing to kill to maintain expand their brands, and we should all take the necessary precautions against both.
